With the continent’s flashiest sides dithering on whether to sign Kevin Keegan, up stepped Hamburger Sport-Verein. The German club was swimming in cash thanks to significant investment from Japanese manufacturing kingpins Hitachi and in 1977 they offered Keegan a staggering salary to join them.
